Main Characters:
Julia- the protagonist as to who the novel revolves around. She tolerates soccer practice, does well in school, looks forward to sleepovers with her best friend, and is becoming ever more critical of her parents and aware of changes in the social dynamics of the kids around her. Julia will lose friends, fall in love, learn harsh truths about her parents, and experience the types of happiness and tensions found in coming-of-age novels.
Seth Moreno: Julia's first love and real friend who is able to teach Julia to enjoy life and learn to experience life outside of her comfort zone.
Joel and Helen: Julia's parents who show the audience the difference between marriage and real love. Joel beings lying to Helen and Julia at an early stage of the novel. Helen beings to be sick and is unable to realize what is really going on with her relationship. Joel beings to cheat on Helen with Syliva and his lying continues.
Hannah: Julia's best friend who she experiences a sort of loss when they have a falling out. At first Julia and Hannah were each other's lifelines, they relied on one another for everything. The two of them did and went everywhere together. This was until Hannah and her family briefly moved to Utah due to the slowing, when she returns her friendship with Julia is totally different. Julia experiences a loss in their friendship and is confused as to why their friendship ended
Sylvia: Julia's piano teacher who is also a real timer that ends up having an affair with her dad. Julia sees Sylvia as a piano teacher at first then takes note when one of her finches dies due to the slowing. Because of this Julia becomes increasingly concerned about Sylvia and how she continues to live on real time and thinks it may be too dangerous. Eventually Julia witnesses her father and Sylvia cheating and realizes her parents relationship is over, she remains concerned about Sylvia despite these issues.
